Default Borneo: New orchids and snail species found

KOTA KINABALU (NST) - Several species of orchids and land snails, believed to be
new to science, have been found in the yet-to-be fully explored Meliau Range in
Sabah.
A recent scientific expedition to the predominantly forest-covered range yielded
the findings, which are expected to excite scientists and researchers.

Many of the species of plants sampled during the expedition, including two
species of rheophytic orchids of the genus 'Malaxis' and 'Appendicula', are new
discoveries.

Orchid and herb expert Anthony Lamb said the two species of orchids were rooted
to the rocks beside a river and was believed to be able to withstand flash
floods.

Other plants are the rare slipper orchid 'Paphiopedilum hookerae volonteanum',
the endemic 'Borneodendron aenigmaticum' and species of carnivorous pitcher and
ant plant. ...(the rest is about snails)
