I think it's better to let them in to nibble some toms or whatever, it's
one of the way's they will get to like the idea of gardening.

Best to go organic though if you've got kids eating the fruit without
washing it - like mine do. I get the impression that the kid in this case
was doing something more unpleasant than a bit of scrumping?
