Noticed this growing on a couple of silver birch trees down the road from
where I live.

Apparently they are :
Piptoporus betulinus
Birch Polypore
Class: Gasteromycetes
Order: Polyporales
Family: Coriolaceae
Genus: Piptoporus
and they are edible. I'm off to get some tomorrow. Yum yum.
