I reported this some months back. Anyway, with what few days of summer
and autumn remaining I began to spread some shingles around currants and
raspberries and fir and spruce. And I am happy to report that all the
ones with the asphalt mulch are growing much better than those without.
I believe it is not only the water retention but more importantly that
the slight acidity of the shingles conditions the soil better.
So I will extensively use roof shingles as a mulch for they do not blow
away nor do they interfer with the mower.
