It won't really address the question of your "bonsai kit" though.

The seeds in those kits, if they sprout and if the sprouts live, will be
10 years, if ever, before they reach bonsaihood. Those kits are designed
for one thing: to make money for the seller. But since they have spearked
your interest, I'd suggest you go to a neaby garden center and purchase a
plant you might be able to turn into a bonsai in a much shorter time. There
are several articles in our "Knowledge Base" (especially by Jerry M.) that
cover plants that are suited for indoor bonsai.

And, as Alan said, find a local club to give you good local advice.
