Nope, I'd be a little less peeved if this was the case. He just
wants grass.

Thanks all for the ideas. I absolutely cannot wait to start
planting! We started tearing out more of the old stuff (mostly
boxwoods) yesterday. It's actually kind of nice to have sore
hamstrings today!
