The "red fibers" are the roots.

The plant is probably something in the Crassulaceae.

the leaves or whatever they are called, were elliptical, about 3/4 of an
inch long, 3/8 of an inch wide, and around 1/8 of an inch thick. no spines
or
thorns, with smooth edges. overall height was about 4 inches. anyway, the
leaves would fall to the ground in the pot, but never seem to die
one of those still green leaves. some small red hair-like fibers are
sprouting from this one,

It is probably trying to grow roots.

not getting real big (perhaps limited by the root space in the small

During the winter, keep them in a very cool location & only water them
about
once a month, or if they start to shrivel. They will not grow during the
winter, unless you put them under fluorescent lights 18 hours a day.
Better let
them rest; they will be more likely to bloom.
