Default Freesia bulbs and the weather

I recently bought 30 freesia bulbs in our local center. However I am very
new to gardening and hence impressively ignorant, so will appreciate
info/advice re the following.

I've just dug and cleared a small bed for the bulbs and am hoping to plant
them there. However the weather forcasts I've heard seem to predict we may
get some cold/frosty nights in the next week or two.

Will the bulbs be OK if I plant them in the next day or two, and then we
get some frost/snow soon? Or is it highly advisible to wait for a few weeks
until planting the bulbs?

Someone I spoke to this morning said the bulbs would be fine if planted 3
inches deep as it would not freeze that deep. But I have no idea if this is
correct.

I am planning to cover the ground with some cocoa mulch once the bulbs are
planted [1]. I assume this will also help insulate them from the cold. (?)

[1] I am also wondering about sowing some sort of seeds above the bulbs,
but not yet decided on this, so comments here would also be welcome.

Slainte,

Jim
