another way is to look at a range of indices, da=t only goes to 2002
unfortunately, but....

In 2002, £75000 0s 0d from 1957 is worth:
£1,110,033.03 using the retail price index
£1,151,189.02 using the GDP deflator
£2,726,740.37 using average earnings
£3,070,106.13 using per capita GDP
£3,534,284.25 using the GDP
