Just buy a bag of compost at the garden center. You don't need one with manure. Only put an inch on top of the soil if you are topdressing or you risk smothering the roots.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
