I did that for a few hours the other evening but we have a LOT of invasive
Bermuda grass and after 3 hours there was little visible progress and
*really* sore fingers....I don't have *that* much time.
Wear gloves to prevent the sore fingers, and put in barriers for the
bermuda grass. ;-) 10" grass barriers should do it.
For quick removal of large amounts of it, I use a 3 tine tiller to break
it up, and a fine rake to get most of it. Problem with that is that any
nodes you miss will sprout fresh grass, but it's easy to pull those up
as they come up. No root networks yet.
I can empathize, really!
I pay someone to do it for me, but only because she and her family are
poor and they have two young kids to support. It's my local "charity"
contribution... Rather than begging me for food or money, she always
asks if I have any work she can do. Weeding is needed all year so there
is nearly always something, as long as I have some spare cash.
I can still remember when $20.00 was a fortune for me too. :-(
Now it's 1 hours wages. I have GOT to get her back into school! sigh
Thing is, I really don't know if there is anything that will kill your
weeds that is not toxic other than using cardboard, carpet, landscaping
cloth etc. and just suffocating them.
A choice mint type groud cover seems to eliminate weeds when I grow it,
spearmint, peppermint and pennyroyal, but that might not be an option
for you!
I'd worry more about the cats than the kids unless you just want to keep
both inside of the house after treating for about 3 weeks. I understand
that Roundup will biodegrade after that time period, but who trusts
Monsanto???
