I'm thinking of buying 12 cordoned pear trees to act as a fruiting
border to
our vegetable garden. These are fairly mature, in a double U shape
and 1.3m
high and are retailing at (gasp) £79.95 each. It would be a major expense

Boggle :-) Garden centre price or specialist fruit nursery?

Do pears fruit reliably for other gardeners in your area ? They
don't do well in some parts of the UK.

Suffolk grows wonderful pears... we are on boulder clay and pears like it.

Lucky you..

The price was from an online nursery and the only place that supply them, as
far as I could tell, all the 'specialist' nurseries either didn't have them
or seemed too 'busy'.

http://www.readsnursery.co.uk/ website says, potgrown cordon pears
£16.50, espalier £28, loads of varieties. Reads have a very good
reputation.

Yep, tried them and they sold out of them in December... a somewhat taciturn
telephone manner as well * I was offput.
