Just out of curiosity as I have not really considered an allotment but
how big is a typical allotment?

I think it varies from area to area. Some of the ones here in rural
cambridgeshire are half an acre and I have heard of ones of an acre.

I would consider one but unless it's next door or I could get there
more than weekends then I thought it impractical.

Long summer evenings are great allotment times. Totally relaxing after
work.

As are early mornings, for the same reason. A couple of years ago I was
working nights, and since I passed the allotment on the way home I used to
go in at 0530 for 1/2hr to an hour to water etc with absolutely no
distractions, catch the snails on their way home etc.

Only works once the clocks have gone forwards, natch.
