"Survival of the fittest" as Charles Darwin used the term (Origin, 6th
ed)? Or as Herbert Spencer used it?

Actually it wasn't used there. It was used after the fact to sum up
the theory and he liked it so much he didn't fight it and started
using it himself.

Or in the words of Bryson in "A Short History of Nearly Everything":

Darwin didn't use the phrase "survival of the
fittest" in any of his works (though he did
express his admiration for it). The expression
was coined five years after the publication of
On the Origin of Species by Herbert Spencer in
Principles of Biology in 1864.

Not that I keep up on these types of things.
