If you have had it 5 years it probably wouldn't hurt to re-pot it as well, or at least top dress it.

The same thing happened to mine, I had two Acers planted in the border and there was a vicious frost during the last week in April a few years back. I was convinced they had "had it". I put them both in large pots and shifted them to the shelter of the shady patio, they made a full recovery and have been very happy since. Good luck with yours, they are terrific plants.
