Sounds as if one side of your plant has been damaged by frost. A very
cold wind and very hot sun can also cause similar damage. The dead
leaves will gradually fall off and new growth will take over, now that
the weather is getting better.

If you have had it 5 years it probably wouldn't hurt to re-pot it as well, or at least top dress it.

The same thing happened to mine, I had two Acers planted in the border and there was a vicious frost during the last week in April a few years back. I was convinced they had "had it". I put them both in large pots and shifted them to the shelter of the shady patio, they made a full recovery and have been very happy since. Good luck with yours, they are terrific plants.
