Martin et al,

The website below was printed on the back of my packet of Whole Earth Foods
Cocoa Crunch (to which I'm very much addicted ))

It calculates your total gas, electricity, fuel oil and coal usages for a
year and then converts that into CO2 emissions and then trees. For
example,
if you reckon that you have a total annual gas bill of ?200, it estimates
that equates to 2.9 tonnes of CO2 or 4 trees. It then invites you to offset
your usage by purchasing the trees at ?10 each, to be planted in one of
three locations (Aberdeenshire, Leicestershire or, for some bizarre reason,
Mexico). You can even choose to have a dedication on your trees.

I have calculated our consumption (there are three of us) and it came to 6
trees so I have paid up my ?60 for last year...

Obviously they are hoping that people will do it every year - making you
feel a little less guilty about using fossil fuels.

I hope "Whole Earth" factored in the airmiles of imported the cocoa
used to make a cheap nutritious locally grown food into a highly
processed one tasting of something exotic. And the oil and trees used to
create printed cereal-packets to bear their message about squandered
resources.

Good old "the world owes me" janet, get right in there you pro hunt
nut.
