My method is to pry the entire hosta from the soil and rest it on top
of a milk crate and then cut the entire mass in half with a machete and
a hammer or a bread knife. If the clump is large you can then quarter
it. A good size division will have 6 or 8 leaves and a solid mass of
root. Plant the divisions and water them well.
