I missed this Jenny. Cycas revoluta does well in sharply drained,
slightly acid- to-neutral composts. It is remarkably nitrogen hungry
and in a starved compost will grow poorly - often robbing its older
leaves of nitrogen to provide for new growth - hence the occasional to
dramatic leaf yellowing. Convention has it that this Cycas is tough,
tolerant or even preferring of dry conditions and meagre in its
nutrient requirements.

Indeed, this is whats happening. new shoots appearing and old leaves going
yellow.
I've repotted in a sandier mix and given it a feed.


BTW I can't imagine how the notion of adding bicarb of soda came to
be. Maybe someone has got it mixed up with Epsom salts, which are
occasionally added to plants that suffer from magnesium deficiencies
and taken by humans to ease indigestion.
