Hi Eddyjack,

It's difficult to be sure which buttercup you have without a better
description. However, the Creeping Buttercup (Ranunculus repens) is a
common and renowned pest species in lawns and gardens. Each plant starts
with a basal rosette, then sends out overground runners which root as nodal
growths touch the ground. To remove by hand, it is easiest to find the
distal end of each runner and pull it until you come to the first of many
rooted new crowns. Uproot this and carry on pulling the runner .. uproot
the next crown, and so on. You will probably have to dig out the parent
rosette; the root is sometimes stubborn but not really deep.

If you feel you must spray, a Glyphosate-based weedkiller is the best
option. It is not selective, though, so take care with wanted plants in the
vicinity.
