The Sunset National zone system is MUCH better (more detailed) than the
USDA zone system, but for some reason has not gained that much acclaim

The Sunset National Garden Book expands the system to include the entire US
and Canada (at least parts of it). The biggest drawback of the Sunset system is
that it ignores minimum winter temperatures. Zone 40, where I am, is a band
that runs along the southern shores of the Great Lakes to New England, but not
right near the water (which is Zone 39). Zone 40 can encompass USDA zones 4 to
6. Ideally, to know what you are doing, you need to be familiar with both
systems.
