Default Laying Turf

can anyone tell me the best time of year to lay turf? and can you lay it on
top of very clayey soil, or is there a lot of preparation needed?

thanks

Turf can be layed in October or November, but as late as February provided the
ground is not frozen or waterlogged. A lot depends on your local climate and
what type of soil you have, slope of site, etc., etc.

As far as preparation of the site/soil is concerned, you're looking to improve
the soil so it drains reasonably well and provides a surface that the grass
roots can knit into, and also some feed to give the grass a fighting chance.
It's an ideal time to think about how level the site is and whether you need to
think about taking out any 'bumps' and filling in any dips. Without looking at
the site first hand it's difficult to give any absolute answers without asking
a load of questions. I'd recommend you get The Lawn Expert by Dr. D. G.
Hessayon. It's been around for an absolute age, so you may well come across a
copy in a second hand bookshop, charity shop, etc.

I hope that this helps. If you do have any further questions please ask away.

Dave.
