It seems from my reading that they are so concerned about the damage
caused by tourists that there is now an 'ecology charge' to visit which
made the cost £1500 for a 3 day visit :-(


I'm afraid so. And there aren't that many visits per year, either.
OTOH, there are other protected and interesting areas, probably not of that
magnitude but not to be sneezed at, either. We spent a couple of nights
anchored in the Lavezzi islands off Corsica (between the Bocca di Bonifacio
and Sardinia) I cannot recommend that too highly for part of a European
holiday:
