What is the goo made from?

A similarly sticky goop, "Tanglefoot", used to band trees against
winter moth here, is made from castor oil, not petroleum.

Yes. I was wondering about the assumption that it was petroleum based.
For one thing it seems like a bit of a folksy remedy rather than the
result of petrochemical marketing (otherwise we would all be aware of
"the new slug cure"). As the poster said that he had seen it in Asia,
I wondered whether it was the latex from a rubber tree which certainly
meets the description. T'would be hard for the money men to package
that and market it cost effectively in small quantities for a
specialised use.
