Default Elderberry

Has anyone managed to kill an Elderberry tree, I chop them down every year
and they thrive!! time to try something more drastic..any suggestions
welcome. Thanks

I once killed a large (20 feet tall) Elderberry tree by pouring lots of neat
Sodium Chlorate weedkiller around its roots washed in with a gallon or two
of water. It took a couple of tubs applied over a few weeks, but it died
after a few months. I would suggest using this method only in Summer though
when the bush is in full leaf and drawing water from the soil. Ordinarily I
would have dug the tree out but this self set tree had grown between two
walls where it was totally inaccessible to get at to chop down, dig up etc.
I wouldn't try Sodium Chlorate if you have any other plants anywhere near it
though, or if you intend to plant anything in the same place within the next
year or two.
Alternatively you could chop the tree down to stump height and use some
stump killer - though I don't know how effective it would be against
elderberry due to their habit of putting up lots of suckers.
