Maybe bulbs/corms as
suggested will do the trick for part of the time and I then wondered if
lamium would work in such a position or even Geranium palmatum.

Carrying on the Geranium theme, I find that G. nodosum copes well with
very dry conditions including deep shade.

I haven't tried that one but we often recommend G. palmatum for such
situations and the Lamium does well, too. Vinca was someone else's
suggestion, I believe and I feel sure it would work but in this garden it's
become something of a thug in all-too-many areas!

Has anyone thought of planting 'mind your own business' on its side?
