Thanks for that. I am going to check out the filter now, the spin
cycle
is
set to not work if the filter is full...last time it was full of
nails.

This is the washing machine mechanic speaking.
Dont know how I got into the gardening section. Maybe the smell of a
job, instead of fertilizer. Anyhow,
first, check the filter, (sounds like it) CLEAN IT EVERY month you lazy
thing!!! (huge grin I dont either,( I have wife) and have one of these
slow washing machines. Why ? Because its cheap!!!
second,open the back(SAFETY FIRST POWER OFF AND TAPS TURNED
OFF
AND KIDS WELL CLEAR PLEASE) make sure the belt isn't slipping
(probably wouldn't work on wash but as spin puts on an additional load,
who knows)
third, if thats not it, it may be the motor. Call an expert and get a
proper opinion. Dont worry about the service call, as its a good
investment and could save you dumping it. Get some one who's
recommended
preferably.
Otherwise, a good dose of epson salts will do wonders for your garden
and the machine.
Oh GOOD!! A washing machine mechanic!! Maybe my life is improving!! Well
I
discovered that for some reason, my boys had posted a handful of nails
into
the machine at some stage, which found their way into the pump filter, I
didn't get to them in time (my stupid fault I know) so I'm pretty sure
the
pump is burned out. Which would have been the burning smell (again,
d'oh).
So the machine works, the pump doesn't. Problem no. 2. The pump is
reeeally
easy to remove, two screws holding it to the base, and two hoses with
clamps. the problem is, the hose clamps aren't the screw kind, but the
tamper proof kind to stop people like me from fixing stuff. The problem
is,
it's an asko and we have no asko service man/repair man here. Can I
order
the pump direct from asko? will they sell one to me? and would it be ok
to
remove the clamps with pliers and just wack on the screw kind? My dad
also
muttered something ominous about 'controllers' indicating it may be
something in the circuit side of things. however, given the burning
smell
and the nails I'm thinking it's the pump. He suggested I check it with a
voltometer or whatever it's called, to make sure it is the pump. Any
more
light you can shed on this?


Yep Asko will sell you one. The price may not be right but what can you
do... there also a universal type pump available but you need to know
what to do to fit those. They're cheaper.
Replace those spring type clamps or whatever type with standard "garden"
variety screw worm type. If the pump is burnt out, smell it. It will be
on the nose. Otherwise the pump should be observed running. If it
doesnt, then forget the ohm meter multi meters, just replace it or get
someone with test equipment to check it further. A jamed pump will cause
the spin motor to smell badly as its dragging the bowl around in water
casuing the motor to run on a heavier load than designed, and of course
not going anywhere.

yeah, that's what was happening and why it wouldn't spin. The filter is
kind of inside the pump, you can pull it out and see into the pump and
nothing is going, water pours through it when the valve is opened and i have
checked thoroughly for blockage, so I'd say it's just dead. I think I'll be
giving asko a ring. it was a 10+yr old pump anyway, mum and dad bought the
machine back in 95 then didn't use it for ages and we got it 4 years ago.
it's been serviced etc so most things are ok, but i'de say the pump has had
it!! thanks for all the advice, it's been really helpful.
