Hi

Any tips on when and how best to grow onions from seed?

Last year I did sets and was a bit disappointed with the return.

I'm in Buxton Derbyshire so the season starts late. The packet of
'Ailsa Craig' that I've got says Jan-Feb to sow indoors.

Any tips gratefully accepted.

You can start the seed in trays any time from now, then plant them out
when they are about 3-4 ins. high. A little protection will help them on
if the weather is still cold at the time, but it is not essential.

I like to avoid having such a big lot of hardening off to do by
starting them in the greenhouse in the 1st week of March. Under
"glass" during frosty spells and before they germinate. I've had good
results from Bedfordshire Champion; tried AC but the vibes always felt
weedy...
