Default Chinese Pear

We bought a Pyrus Calleryana "Chanticleer" in November 2003 because of its
glorious colours - reds, oranges, etc.

Last summer, the leaves were unhealthy, with brown patches, and they dropped
off without turning colour. I took a sample back to the garden centre and
was advised to give the tree a tar wash next year. In fact, this year we
have been dosing it regularly with organic pest spray and the leaves stayed
very healthy. But when autumn came, the leaves changed to a dull greeny
brown and have just dropped off. No colours. I'm so disappointed.

I should be very grateful for advice.

TIA

Dear daphne,
Without seeing the tree at that time it is difficult to help, however
your description so far describes the colours and habit of a Pyrus
salicifolia. This tree is grey in foliage more or less until the autumn
drop. May be the tree was suffering in its first year from drought!
may be its worth while taking the tree back to the garden centre if it
is the wrong tree.
It would be good to get an answer from this. Steve.
