I know what you mean: my husband and I spent a happy few hours looking in
dune slack ponds in Aberffraw NNR and larger lakes in Newborough SSSI (on
Angelsey) yesterday. The dune clacks were full of freshly laid frog spawn
and mating toads, and there were so many toads in full grapple in the lake
in Newborough that they could be heard like a distant flock of geese! It is
later here this year: last year the toads had spawned and gone by the last
week of February and the frogs had spawned by middle of February. It was
bad breeding year though round here last year because of low water levels:
the slacks had almost dried out altogether by the end of March.

Your photograph is a really good one. Would you mind if I used it in
lectures I give to undergraduates on amphibian breeding?
