Default Black bamboo in south Florida

I plan on putting several stands of black bamboo along the side of my house.
The lower portion will be shaded, and above eight feet they'll get plenty of
direct sun. Is there anything I need to know about the cultivation of this
plant in south Florida before I install them? How drought resistant are
they?

Thanks, Rick DeBay

A suggestion--use the bambusa lako variety which is a black clumping bamboo.
There is a running variety (p.nigra) but it does not do well with our Florida
heat. It needs a certain amount of cold weather which we don't have here. You
might want to check out www.tropicalbamboo.org for pics of the bambusa lako.
Also, I think Robert Saparito (see www.tropicalbamboo.com) is a supplier of it
in your area. I think you'll find that it is quite expensive.
Good Luck,
Doug
