i have been able to get the thing to grow back small patches of foliage,
but only
for short amounts of time before they fall off again.

Check your soil and watering. They like frequent watering, but very good
drainage.

it is indoors, under a light for about 14 hours a day, and until recently
it was on a humidity tray.

I have my lights on 18 hours. Get a humidity gauge. Plan on putting it outdoors
for the summer.
