Default Blanching leeks!

Yes I know it sounds like a cooking question but it isn't!

I have a number of leeks in the ground which were set out last year,
they seem to be growing well but as expected the growth above
ground is all green.

Can I do anything with them to make the above ground growth white
and thus be more to eat?

I seem to remember that gardeners used to wrap something like
newspaper round them to encourage the white edible part.

Is my memory correct and is there still time to do that?
