One possibility is Camellia - it will grow taller than you mention but it
can be kept trimmed.

Thanks everyone. I live in West Yorkshire (UK). The shrubs around the gap
are mostly the aforementioned hebees, but there's what was no doubt one
year's family Christmas tree (now about twelve feet tall) quite close too,
and a nice rosemary bush that's doing well. Also a holly.

Camellia seems to be the consensus so far!!

As long as you haven't got limey soil, you should be fine with Camellias.
We have a new baby one called C. japonica 'Takanini' which started flowering
in November and is still going and it's only about 2' tall so far! And as a
little extra bonus, when your Camellia is big enough, you can grow e.g. a
Clematis through it, so that you get summer flowers in the same spot. Both
like to have damp feet but good drainage, not standing-in-water sort of
damp.
I haven't been there but apparently Wentworth has a good display of
Camellias, so a visit when it opens on 1st April might be worth your while:
