Hello, Jackie. People here range from the expert professional to people in
precisely the same state as you. I'm somewhere in between, still with a lot
to learn but luckily for me, married to a nurseryman!

I was very kindly given 3 hebe last September which I duly planted. They are
in semi shade and have been well watered.

Up until now I hadn't noticed much of a problem, but looking at them today
as I started clearing up ready for the spring I notice that on all three the
majority of the foliage is brown with only the under branches are still
green.

AIUI, hebes like to be in sun and a well-drained soil, though they don't
like their roots to get too dry. Is it possible the place they're in is too
shady and that the rain drains away too rapidly? And of course, the other
question is, where do you live and have you had severe frosts?

Have I killed them?
Or will they go back in the spring?

X fingers that they will if you take off the dead bits. But in the unlikely
event that someone here can't help you, here's a useful link:
