hello all - I am new so please be kind!

I moved into my house last year and its my first garden, I am very
enthusiastic but have very little knowledge about gardening.

I was very kindly given 3 hebe last September which I duly planted. They are
in semi shade and have been well watered.

Up until now I hadn't noticed much of a problem, but looking at them today
as I started clearing up ready for the spring I notice that on all three the
majority of the foliage is brown with only the under branches are still
green.

Have I killed them?
Or will they go back in the spring?
What did I do wrong?

Not all hebes like cold weather.
Do you know which type it is??
I've had some die on me in the past while others romp away.......
