Yep. It has been used for thousands of years, and still is. The
main safety issue is about different people contributing, when
some individuals have infections/parasites. You need a long
time-frame, and, preferably, hot-composting, with the right
proportions of ingredients, and the right total volume.

if/when the bird flu comes as a pandemic and if the sewerage/reticulated
water goes down you will need to consider this question seriously.
