I've done the experiment once. Bougth two of the same plant
and put them in two different tanks, one sans pot, the other
with.

There was zero difference a year later. So, do what you want
the plant doesn't care.

Pro: it's easy.
Con: is displaces a large amount of substrate.

There's no other issues that come to mind.
