I'm after a smallish tree with as much seasonal interest as possible
(flowers, autumn colour, interesting bark), but one that hasn't got
invasive roots because although it won't be near any buildings it will
be close to the boundary with a neighbour and they have a path that I
don't want to damage.

One of the sorbus (mountain ash) family would do. Hardy anywhere,
and the roots won't get up to mischief next door.

Joseph Rock perhaps? Lovely berries, very long lasting. Stays
pretty small.

I would be remiss not to suggest a maple, so how about
Acer griseum? Pretty red/brown leaves unfolding, strange
little yellow flowers, fantastic autumn color, really great
peeling reddish bark. Can get biggish but will do it so slowly
that it's unlikely to be a problem. Very easy to grow, too.

David Ross' comment, since it was cross-posted -- which
everyone but Janet managed to leave in -- it hardly seems
inappropriate he would respond with a comment regarding zones,
which are frequently discussed on rec.gardens. We can't
all be bothered to look at the headers of every post, of course!
