my lawn is riddled with moss and needs returfing. i was going to have
the existing turf lifted and then new turf put on. some blokes had a
look and said the best thing to do is leave the existing turf/moss on
and cover it with 2" of sand and then put the new turf on top of
that. they say it will kill the moss underneath and the new turf
will root into the sand. they also say its the wet ground causing
the moss and the sand will soak it up and stop moss reoccurring. i
appreciate it would also be a much easier job for them though i
wonder if it will work and is this the right approach. is this right
or is it a con, advice appreciated thankyou

no you will have problems by doing that either apply a mosskiller or
iron after spiking then after a week scarify removing the dead moss
and overseed with some top dressing.
Or rip the whole lot up dig over level and lay turf.

And then the moss will probably come back anyhow. It grows wherever
conditions are suitable, and fiddling around can't usually bring about a
major change, so you'll generally have to repeat the treatment every
couple of years or even annually. I wouldn't touch "some blokes" with a
bargepole: they haven't a clue.
