Several of my hardy plants in large pots have died over Winter. I
suspect this is because of the low temperatures we had the roots have

if so is there anything that can be done to protect them without moving
them indoors?

Were they evergreens? I believe some evergreens (IIRC rhodies are an
example) can continue to transpire through their leaves even though
the roots are frozen, and they die from lack of water!

Wrap the pots with bubble polythene next year?
