Default Loss of hardy pot plants

Several of my hardy plants in large pots have died over Winter. I suspect
this is because of the low temperatures we had the roots have been
damaged. Is this the most likely reason (they were OK last year), if so is
there anything that can be done to protect them without moving them
indoors?

The most likely reason is that the pots got waterlogged and the plants
drowned. Ensure good drainage in all pots.
A majority of plants prefer reasonable drainage and in summer there is no
problem with locating plants in wet compost because they are actively
growing.
I have some plants that are repotted in winter into a very well draining mix
in which they would have difficulty surviving in a hot summer.
