Default this idiot Koi-lo

Holy cow ! ! Jeeze !
1.
I think i'd better offer some rapid explanations and then go back to
lurking.
2.
If spammer want's to communicate with me ( and like slugs and creepy
crawly things, i don't dislike them and could learn a lot from them..so
long as i'm careful..) please e-mail me.
3.
I will not post anymore after this ( unless it's strictly on-topic and
on gardening ), until i figure out Xnews and nntp etc. This whole
matter is closed to me after this post !!
Err..that sounds rather fierce so

Me (oldPost) - didn't think you'd actually keep track of this old post

Janet - It's not old, you posted it on June 20.
Me (oldPost) -and wasn't expecting anyone on rec.gardens to read what
i posted,
Janet - Uh? You posted it to an entire public newsgroup.

Explanation:
Well, it's like this:
1. In deja.com once i enter rec.gardens i have to constantly click
"Older topics »" ( at least 20 times/there's a short cut now on the
right panel - "new posts" ) to reach the "this idiot Koi-lo" post.

I assumed that it's fairly in-accessible to most people ( who'd want to
click and go back 15-20 pages ! ). Old is a relative term and since
there are so many new posts ( 20 pages of new posts ! ), i didn't think
anyone would notice my originally small post buried in a tiny corner of
rec.gardens !!!

Me (oldPost) - Can you mark posts and be notified when new-entries
crop up ? How do
i do that ?
Janet - You sem to be confused; this is not a website message board, a
chatroom, or an e-list. It's a usenet newsgroup.
Googlegroups (which you're
using to acces it), is only a portal; like looking in on
a party through a window.
Anyone using a newsreader (the medium for which usenet is
designed) will be
shown the new posts that their news-server collected since
last time the
looked. They are at the same party you're looking in on,
but able to pick and
choose what they eat and who they talk to.

Explanation:
Oh! I'm NOT confused and i know about uucp, nntp, nym's, newsgroups and
stuff. I've been reading up after seeing spammer's posts claiming to be
invisible etc..

But, how in tarnation did you just leap on to this post out of a
gazillion posts ! ! I've known females to be lynx eyed..anyway..i
understand now..your news client downloads all new posts and probably
informs you about it !

I assumed that it would be okay to start a quiet and off-topic private
conversation with spammer since i wasn't in everyone else's face ! But
that's not how the client works and if it's signalling everyone about
new posts ! ! !

ME Kill-files don't really work
J I suspect you're thinking of email filter/killfiles.
On usenet, a good newsreader will provide a range of trap-options
in
the killfile , AND a range of options for viewing thread structures
before reading posts. That combination enables the user to exclude
or
bypass (unread) any repeat poster; whatever ID they are using.
On many newsgroups where the majority of users share a particular
interest and want to pursue its discussion, persistent trolls are
rapidly filtered out of their newsreaders. They may keep posting,
but
unseen and unanswered by the majority.

Exp:
Well i disagree, but since experience counts; shall defer. Every part
of the header is fakeable except the ISP ip..and there are 200 odd
ISP's with free access and legit
users! Theoretically he could make our life miserable.

Then it becomes rather annoying
to the majority if some newbie, who fails to recognise the troll,
keeps
engaging it in the same old tiresome conversations and requoting its
posts in full (by passing everyone's filters). The newbie finds the
novelty entertaining, longer term readers do not.

Yeah, i found the whole thing a hoot *grin*

IME, that newbie has a very short period of grace in which to cease
playing with trolls to the detriment of the rest of the group. If he
persists, he tends to join the troll in the KF, as a means to eliminate
the trolls garbage once more. . Then the newbie finds his legitimate
posts go unanswered (because they weren't read) , and ends up talking to
himself.

Yeah i see your point, he's riding on my back so to speak. If i respond
to him, then all of you see my posts, think that i'm discussing
something cool with regards to gardening and then wham ! it's actually
a spammer thread or some thing off-topic.

It's not so, with a purely web based forum..and my thinking was along
those lines..

Very well, i shall seize and desist and many thanks ! But i do wish
that newsgroups were easier ( like IRC and the web ). We just have a
FAQ for newbies with the rules.
If the rules are broken, then kick-ban for 5-minutes and a quick link
to the rules section.
