Show to feature 50,000 orchids

Chiang Mai (TNA) - More than 50,000 orchid plants of a thousand
varieties from around the world will be showcased at the international
flora exposition in Thailand's northern resort province of Chiang Mai
beginning in November this year and running through January next year,
Agricultural Commodities Promotion and Management Bureau Director Oran
Phitak said Sunday.

World orchids of rare and varied species, both local and hybrid,
traditional and biotech, will be on display at the "Orchid Park," the
largest ever drawn together in Thailand in imitation of a natural orchid
park, Mr Oran said.

Thirty-two nations have so far confirmed their participation in the
Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 - the 92 day international horticultural
exposition to be held from Nov 1 through next Jan 31.

The grand display of world orchids at the Thailand event honouring His
Majesty the King will showcase Thailand's potential as the global orchid
centre, Mr Oran said, and will also demonstrate to the world the
kingdom's success in development of exotic and beautiful varieties of
orchids.

The Royal Floral Ratchaphruek will also promote orchid production as a
business as well as a complete range of technological concerns, he said.

Apart from some of the most extensive displays of orchids ever seen, the
Royal Flora Ratchphreuk exposition will also include orchid contests,
the director said.
