Default poppy seed when to sow

I have seen it done both ways, but I prefer doing it in early spring. Less
loss over the winter that way.

just collected some wild poppy seed pods and wondering when would be the
best time to sow them. as the pods are open now would now be the best time
or would I get more success sowing them next spring?

Assuming you're living somewhere sensible and not the Evil Empire,
you'll lose fewer seeds in the ground than out. Their main need is for
bare ground to germinate on, as the young seedlings don't compete well.
If you have heavy moisture-retentive soil where weeds grow a foot high
as soon as you get two warm spring days on the trot, turn it over in
March and then sow them.
If your soil's dry and inclined to be poor, or you're growing them in
cracks in concrete (my yellow poppies love that) just sow them now.
