Default slow worms

Having a tidy up on the compost heap today I found a slow worm, what a
beautiful creature it is.

Yes we had them on our old allotment site, the few of us left there used to
find them on a regular basis and one chap found 6 under a bit of corrugated
iron on his plot one day.
We wondered for some while what was killing and eating snails, next to our
compost bin, there was a big pile of shells that seemed to happen over one
winter, and I assume it must have been the large male Slow Worm that I found
when I emptied it out to use it. However, they are supposed to hibernate but
perhaps it was warm enough for him to stay active.
All we have on our new plot are Rats and Mice. :-(
