Over a year ago, I took on a gardening job that was ... erm ... a bit
like "biting off more than I could chew".
The front garden, that seemed to have a death wish for all living
organisms, needed investigating, so I dug a test patch and discovered
... pretty much solid clay, several feet deep.
My master plan was to "excavate" the whole thing right down to the
hardcore and start again. Well I managed to do the "removal", but since
then I've just had a huge crater where my front lawn used to be.
Finally after more than one year, I've filled it up again, with coarse
sand and granite chips mixed 50:50, followed by topsoil.
It's taken one year, several thousand pounds, and more blood, sweat and
tears than I care to measure, but finally it's done.
I know it's only half four in the afternoon, but I'm going to bed now.

I have reason to believe that the 'rec' on uk.rec.gardening stands for
'recreation'.
