Default Acer

My Mother has a small Acer in a pot which she fears to have died from lack
of water.
Upon inspection I noticed that although the outer branches are dead and
brittle nearer the the main trunk some young leaves have sprouted.
Is this plant to be saved by pruning and when please ?

Most Acers do not respond too well to pruning. Leave it alone until it has
made new growth. Remove the dead wood but do not cut into any living wood
(ie leave a very small stump of dead wood).
