Can someone tell me if its OK to plant tomatos near cabbages, say 30cm
distance?

A bit further away. I'd go for 50cm with something smallish and

short-lived
(radishes?) in between to use the space. Both the cabbages and tomatoes

like
a bit of lime in the soil and plenty of food and regular water. Erratic
watering will give you split tomatoes and cracked cabbage hearts.
