I have some elks that I feed lettuce leaves to once a week. They are
extremely healthy as and I water these daily also. The lettuce breaks down
because the slugs, slaters and other small bugs eat it all. I n the process
creating leaf mould inside.

i would assume if you aren't feeding them then you maybe washing away what
little nutrient they have.
