Hi there,
I've found a huge stack of old slate roof tiles in the corner of my
shed and was wondering if they could be of any use in the garden ? I
am all for recycling and thought perhaps they could be put to use as
some kind of decorative mulch. Is this a feasible idea ? Perhaps
someone could suggest other practical garden uses for the tiles. I
would appreciate any imaginative solutions !
Thanks very much.

Don Witton who has one of the national collections of Euphorbias
on an allotment at Harthill used a lot of smashed slates crushed
to make paths round his beds. I regularly dig old roofing slates
out of my own rubble strewn site. Only one in a hundred is intact
so the rest go for mulch. I smash them down to 3cm size pieces
first. The fine chippings, flakes and dust go in the potting compost.
The intact ones go for edgings etc. But if you have a good number
of intact tiles I'd certainly suggest selling them.
